The Borland Database Engine is an user interface of the Firma Borland Inc. to use databases. It offers the access to popular databases as dBase and Paradox.
A lot of well known applications are using this program. The users don't know that they are working with the BDE. But if he tries to run the same application under Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Vista appears the message 'Error initializing the Borland Database Engine'. In this case it is obvious that not the application is bad but there's no compatible installation of the BDE for Microsoft Windows 8, 7 or Vista present.

If the BDE is not installed, a common problem where eEnterprise is copied from one server to another, then you will have to install the BDE using the eEnterprise distribution CD. BDE uses a build system based on waf, which islocated in the BDE Toolsrepository. This build system must be set up before being used:

1. Make sure that python 2.6 - 2.7 are installed on the system.
2. Download BDE Tools and add thepath <bde_tools_repo_root>/bin to the system PATH environmentvariable. Make sure the first waf command found in PATH is a script from that path.
